OMAR HAKIM ::
오마 하킴은 80년대에는 웨더리포트와 스팅, 90년대에는 마돈나와의 활동 등 대단한 경력의 소유자이다. 말 그대로 다양한 메이저 아티스트(마일즈 데이비스, 데이빗 보위, 마이클 잭슨, 존 스코필드, 머라이어 캐리, 믹 재거, 브링스 스프링스턴)와의 수백개의 앨범 프로젝트를 가져왔다. 현재 Pearl 엔도저로 활동 중이며, 독자적인 솔로 아티스트로 활동 중이다.
10살때 아버지 밴드에서의 연주로부터 마돈나와 스테디움에서 공연을 하기 까지 Omar Hakim은 모든 것을 섭렵하였다. 그의 재능과 독특한 스타일은 세계적인 드러머와 음악인 사이에서 가장 선망의 대상으로 인정 받게 하였다. 뉴욕 뮤직 & 아트 스쿨을 졸업한 후, 그의 경력은 여러가지 팝과 소울 그룹과 함께 레코딩하는 것으로 부터 시작되었다. 그이 아버지, 하산 하킴은 듀크엘링톤과 카운트 바시의 트롬본 연주자로 활동을 하였으며, 어린 오마하의 귀를 열어주는 데 있어 크게 도움을 주었고, 오마하는 지금껏 가장 유명한 재즈퓨전 밴드인 Weather Report에서 연주하게 된다. 그의 음악의 시작에 관한 에피소드를 이렇게 말한다. "나는 어렸을때 부터 자연스럽게 드럼과 리듬에 친숙해 졌지요. 5살때 삼촌에게서 크리스마스 선물로 장난감 드럼을 받은 때부터 드럼을 시작했다고 할 수 있는데, 드럼을 목에 걸어 주자마자 난 즉시 마칭리듬 비슷한 비트를 연주했습니다."
1982년, 그는 Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul과 함께 대단히 극찬을 받은 Procession, Domino Theory, This Is This, Sporting Life with Weather Report 등 명앨범 제작에 참여하게 되고, 또한 이들과의 연주하는 3년 동안에도 스팅의 드러머로 연주하기도 하였으며 이 때 그의 첫번째 솔로 타이틀 Dream of The Blue Turtles를 내놓게 된다. David Sanborn, Dire Straits, Marcus Miller, Mariah Carey, Miles Davis, Chic, 그리고 David Bowie와 같은 아티스트들과의 계속되는 투어와 리코딩으로 이제 오마하는 재즈와 팝의 세계에서 큰 인물로 알려지게 되었다.
"때때로 사람들이 당신의 락음악을 들었다면 그들은 당신을 락드러머로 인식하지 다른 음악을 연주하는 것을 기대하지 않습니다. 또는 그들이 당신이 재즈연주하는 것을 기억한다면 당신을 재즈 드러머로 밖에 인식하지 않습니다. 전 제가 락 드러머나 재즈 드러머가 아닌 Total Musician으로 알아주기를 바란다는 사실을 의식했으며 항상 내가 음악의 모든 것을 섭렵하고 있다는 것을 강조했습니다."
오마하킴은 세션이나 투어 드러머 , 클리니션으로 첫번째로 선호되고 있으며, 프로듀서이자 멀티 연주자로 또한 인정 받게 되었고, 결국 그의 이름으로 두 장의 솔로 음반을 제작하게 되었다. 가장 최근의 타이틀인 The Groovsmith는 Jazz와 R&B, Ryhthm & Funk가 최상의 조화를 이룬 작품이라 할 수 있으며 작곡가로서의 재능을 보여주었다.
Omar Hakim의 연주를 들어보기만 하면 그의 파워풀하고 다이내믹한 Snare Sound를 기억할 것이다. Pearl의 Omar Hakim Signature Series Snare Drum은 수 많은 13 x 5인치 스네어 드럼에서 좀처럼 찾기 힘든 독특한 음색을 보여준다. 매우 드물게 자연무늬 그대로 Finish처리한 Six Ply 100% African Mahogany Shell에 2.3mm Shell Hoop로 만들었으며, "Gladstone"형 Strainer, 정밀조정이 가능한 Stainless Steel Tension Rod 그리고 Solid Brass는 섬세한 Tuning을 가능하게 하였다. 100% 천연 Mahogany Shell의 그 독특한 따뜻함과 약간 어두우면서 Dry한 사운드가 13 x 5인치만의 특징이 잘 혼합되어, Powerful하면서도 소리가 쭉 뻗어나감과, Cutting Attack 및 음의 색깔 등이 완벽한 조화를 이루어 낸 것이다.
